Area Information

Nestled in Virginia's beautiful Franklin County, Boones Mill is a wonderful town situated only 11 miles south of Roanoke. Blessed with an abundance of beauty and natural resources, this area combines its rural character with today's modern lifestyle to provide residents a wide range of activities and experiences from the uniquely simple to the highly sophisticated.

Franklin County was first settled prior to 1750. Like many parts of early America, this area quickly became a melting pot for a number of cultures including English, Scottish, Irish, German, African and Native Americans. Franklin County, Virginia itself was established in 1786 and was named after the great statesman and inventor, Benjamin Franklin. Upon its establishment, Boones Mill was named for Jacob Boone, settler and cousin of Daniel Boone.

Franklin County was home to Confederate General Jubal Anderson Early, and Booker T. Washington, a slave who became one of the main civil rights activists of his era. During Prohibition, local wits named Franklin County the "Moonshine Capital of the World," a name trumpeted today by the local Chamber of Commerce.

Average high temperatures reach only 87 degrees in July, with average lows dipping to 27 degrees in January. Monthly precipitation has an average of 3.7 inches with about 21.9 inches of annual snowfall.

There are many elementary schools located throughout the County to serve the needs of our area: http://www.frco.k12.va.us/. Benjamin Franklin Middle School and Franklin County High School are both located in Rocky Mount. Higher education opportunities nearby include Virginia Western Community College, Ferrum College, Hollins College, Liberty University, Virginia Tech, Radford University, and the University of Virginia.
